Back to Basics: Skincare 101

Hey Standard Babes!

Today we're going back to the basics of skincare, recapping the importance of preventative skincare, to different skin types and the best products for them, and tips on keeping your skin healthy during the cold upcoming winter months.

Preventative Skincare

So when it comes to skin care, it's better to take preventative measures rather than corrective measures. Maintaining healthy skin from a young age will result in a youthful glow no matter how old you are. And that's what we're all here for, right? 😉

Top Pick for Preventative Skincare: Retinol
Retinol is a popular skincare ingredient that has powerful anti-aging properties. It is a must-have in maintaining youthful skin. Our Retinol serum is a blend of retinol, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid, the latter being a very effective skin hydration product that also helps to maintain that youthful glowing skin we're all after 💧 Start with retinol in your mid/ early 20ies, babe!

We also recommend that our Retinol serums be applied at nighttime, but if you choose to apply it during the day, please be sure to end of your skin care routine with a high quality SPF to protect your skin from sun damage. (Note that this can only be done with the 0,3% serum. The 1,5% is too strong for daytime application.)

Different Skin Types

Did you know that every skin type reacts differently to each ingredient? Commercial products made for the entire population may not really be the best bet for your skin! Which is why knowing your unique skin type is extremely essential for your skincare.

There are five basic skin types - normal, oily, dry, combination and sensitive. If you aren't sure what your skin type is, you can take our quick skin type test here.

1. Normal Skin Top Pick: Moisture Bomb

2. Oily Skin Top Pick: African Black Soap
3. Dry Skin Top Pick: Hyaluronic Acid Serum

4. Combination Skin Top Pick: BHA Salicylic Acid Toner
5. Sensitive Skin Top Pick: Aloe & Cucumber Toner

We all know that looking good helps us feel good and vice-versa. We want you to keep your skin healthy, energised, vibrant, and rejuvenated to avoid any signs of ageing and other problems that may arise over time. Happy, healthy skin makes for a happy, healthy you ✨

Healthy Winter Skin

Those winter months are right around the corner and you may already be feeling the drying effects of the chill on your skin. If this is you, you may be at a loss for where to begin with keeping your skin in tip-top condition... Well, don't you worry babe; we've got your back 😘

Here are some skincare tips and key points for you to keep in mind:

  • Humidity and dry skin are BFFs, and by keeping the shower door closed, you can increase moisture while showering or bathing.
  • Wash your face with warm water rather than hot water and keep very long hot showers to a minimum.
  • Wash your face gently and pat-dry with a soft cotton towel. Do not rub-dry, as this will cause irritation and damage over time.
  • Moisturise your face while it is still slightly damp to encourage deeper penetration into the skin.
  • Do not over-cleanse; once a day is enough (and you can even get away with only cleansing a couple of times a week!).
  • STAY HYDRATED!
